What happened to my cookies? they came out of oven flat?!?!
thanks!
Answers: i made it according to the recipe, tollhouse choc. chip cookies. the dough tastes incredable, it says to bake for 9-11 min but after 7 min they were flat as can be, they still taste good, but what did i do wrong?
thanks!
Is your baking soda or baking powder old? That could do it. Also, did you use margarine or butter?
Did you put in the baking soda? If you did, maybe it was old.
Sounds like you are missing an ingredient
that happens to me when i use the amount of butter they tell me too. if i use a lil less butter they turn out good. or jus add a lil more flour
Did you move to altitude? I grew up at 7,000 feet and never thought you could bake your own cookies that weren't flat!
Even if the baking powder was good, it may have snuck by you. Did you get interrupted after you added the liquid ingredients? (did you go answer the phone? Door? Watch TV?) Once liquid is added to the dry ingredients, baking powder begins working and can lose its kick. The next time it has a chance to work is in the oven, but you'll only get half the effect.
If they still taste good, that's all that really matters.
I didn't think baking soda could go bad, but I did learn some things:
Consistency and texture can be changed if you change the type of fat used... like margarine for butter and visa versa.
Changing the type of sugar, or using Splenda can also change consistency and texture.
Baking Soda needs rest time in order for it to do it's work putting out air that expands things.
I'm glad they taste good... now you just have a new variety...
maybe the dough was too warm. next time try cooling the dough in the freezer for 5 min. before baking them.
In cookie recipes that call for butter, if the room temperature is warm or you take too long from mixing to oven, the butter will be too warm and the cookies will spread. Down here in the south, I have to refrigerate the dough for a half an hour before I bake, or they are flat.
