My kids and I just buy vanilla frosting in a can like betty crocker or whatever and then dye it different colors and frost them up. Simple and tastes great!

man mayonnaise

google it or metacrawler just type in sugar cookie icing recipies

pink

I'd try the christmas colored sugar sprinkles. When you stack it, some of it will just fall to the bottom, not be all messy. Plus, it won't take away from the fact that they are sugar cookies(they're delicious!).

Happy baking!

1 cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
food coloring

1. Stir the powdered sugar and the milk until smooth.
2. Beat in corn syrup and vanilla until icing is smooth and glossy.
3. If it's too thick, add more corn syrup.
4. Divide icing into separate bowls and stir in food coloring as desired.
5. You can dip the cookies, paint them with a paint brush or spread them using a knife or the back of a spoon.

Last year I made sugar cookies using Alton Brown's recipe (recipe link below) - they were delicious and I used his recipe for royal icing which was equally delicious and easy. Once you've put the icing on you do need to lay out the cookies and allow the royal icing to dry, this takes about 30 minutes at most. Once it's dry, they can be stacked without the worry of transferring icing to other cookies...mine turned out beautifully.

I use buttercream frosting and decorate it with a frosting tip and decorative sugars. i get loads of reviews on this.
