Tortilla/Chappati/Roti makers?!

Question: Hello,

Can you tell me please. Are the tortilla makers I've been seeing basically the same type of machine used to make the Chappati/Rot(Indian flat breads)?

If I bought one can it make all of those?

I agree with "Drunk Pupp" I bought one in Toronto ON Canada for Puri the Indian fried bread served with Channa Dal, all are basilcally the same except some maybe bigger than other in circumferance to make larger products.

Mine is about 4 -5" in diameter, is made from heavy cast aluminum, I have seen in the Hispanic stores here in Toronto a wooden style and you can with a few pieces of wood, hinges, a decent saw and a few minutes of cutting make one of your own for 1/2 the cost of a premade one, but a metal one is more durable and give you more leway and options for the different styles of thing you want to make.

Of course, the recipe and the cooking of the flat breads are almost exact. I used to have a tortilla press until I became proficient at using a rolling pin. The only limitation you will see is the size of the bread you can make.

I think the one I used to have was only 7 inches, it was perfect for tacos and side roti. A bit small for burritos and curry wraps.

I think you just need to practice a bit with the rolling pin. Flour, water, salt and a drop of oil is not too expensive to practice.

Good luck.
