If you want to make fresh Pesto there are quite a few differnt recipes that do not involve pine nuts or nuts at all. Here is a site that might help got a lot of differnt recipes for both nut and no nut pesto recipes:

Also if you want to try something different for pasta I'd suggest Aglio E Olio. Its basically either Ziti. Penne, Linguine or Spaghetti pasta(or your choice i've noticed lol) in a Garlic and olive oil sautée, Just put olive oil in a pan start to heat it up, get crushed, minced or chopped garlic and put it in stir and try not to let the garlic burn. then just add a little grated Parmesan to it and its yummy and healthy too.
I make my pesto without the pine nuts. I add the pesto with some chicken broth over linguini. I also freeze pesto in ice cube trays. When frozen pop them out and put in a baggie. I them use this for spag. sauce and soups. Basil is very easy to grow on a window sill where there is sun. Only takes 2-3 weeks to get some to use. Try it.
traditionally speaking, yes. it adds a nice flavor and texture. if you are allergic i guess you don't have a choice. i prefer a tubular or spiral pasta when using a pesto sauce. i think it holds on to the sauce better than long thin pastas.
You can omit the pine nuts. My favourite thing to do with pesto is to mix it with cream to make a creamy pesto sauce tossed with linguine.
no nuts aren't a necessity in pesto sauce. I've also tried using different herbs other than basil. My fave was arugula.
Pine nuts add a unique texture and flavor to the pesto sauce but are not necessary. All you need is basil, olive oil, and some parmigiana cheese.
I like to put pesto on bow tie pasta myself but it is good all all pasta.
You could add hard cheese, grated, to pesto, also tomato paste for a different type of pesto. Any pasta goes good with pesto, but it is great with cheese in lasagne.
