You Will Do Great!

It's not that hard to be GOOD. All you need is a cookbook and motivation. You have the motivation and I don't know if you have a cookbook. Pick something that sounds good...I started with Chicken Parmesan. It's really easy.

I'll even share the recipe:

You'll need:
4 chicken breasts (boneless and skinless)
4 slices of cheese (mozzarella is what book calls for...I've played around and it doesn't really matter on what kind of cheese and it doesn't even have to be slices it can be shredded)
flour
bread crumbs
cream (like the kind you get for coffee)
spaghetti sauce
Parmesan cheese

This is what you do:

Take the chicken out of package (must be thawed)

beat the chicken with a meat hammer (use a wood block and
saran wrap to stop the splatter) until it is around half an inch to an inch thick

Set a plate aside for dipping the chicken in the bread crumbs
Mix flour and bread crumbs (about a 1/2 a cup of each)

pour a bit of cream on the chicken on both sides

then take the chicken and place it on the plate with the crumbs...be sure to get both sides. Set that chicken piece on another plate and repeat for all the other chicken

After all the chicken is breaded you want to place it on a skillet (pan) and fry it a bit until it's brown on both sides (light brown...dark brown is bad). *Also make sure the chicken is not pink when you are done (just take a fork and knife and check the center (before you move on to the next step) if it is pink then keep frying until it is not pink.

Once the chicken is done put it into a casserole dish place the slices of cheese or (shredded cheese) on top of the chicken.

Then pour half - a whole bottle of spaghetti sauce on it (make sure the chicken is covered.

Sprinkle the parmesan cheese and some shredded if you have some. (not alot though of the shredded)

Cover the dish with Aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 - 40 mins.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 - 20 mins.

I hope this works out for you, like it did for me.

Best bet for the bake time is check at the minimum to see if all the cheese is melted (the sauce should be boiling (a bit))

I'll tell you my secret.... go buy a cook book, or look up recipes online and just follow the directions, works every time. Good Luck, I've been there myself.

Hello Brie!
I love your "story." Actually I started to learn how to cook by working in the kitchen with my Mom. Looking back - the time was special.

When I married, I had to learn a lot of new cooking skills. There is a link below to read about it called "How To Cook An Egg." I hope you enjoy it.

The second link below will take you to the main page of my website. I am building that site for people just like you. The recipes are "proven," meaning they are recipes that work for almost everyone (can't please 100% but you can get close to it). They are Real Restaurant Recipes.

I wish you the best, Brie.

My mom never taught me to cook either. What pretty much saved me from canned chili and starvation after she was gone was the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. (The red plaid cover) I'd just look through it until I found something simple enough I could make and I followed the recipe to the letter. Once I discovered I could cook and have it be tasty, I moved on to more complicated dishes. And when I'd make something, I'd critique myself. Like "Needs more garlic" or "needs less horseradish" or "leave the fennel out" for the next time. It totally becomes a passion.

You'll do great!

hmm very simple... go to website..

Okay, I can totally relate to you!! The thing is, my mom was eager to show me how to cook, but I was always busy with other things. I regret that now. When I got married I wasn't that interested in cooking because I was totally afraid to fail! My husband is such a good guy, he volunteered a lot to cook for us. He inspired me to WANT to learn to cook for him, even if it was just simple recipes. I found the BEST magazine to subscribe to, with extremely simple and yummy recipes that you don't need to go get crazy ingredients for. It used to be called Quick Cooking magazine, but they recently changed the name to "Simple and Delicious". All the recipes are reader-submitted (so they work in real-life, with real-life ingredients) and tested in the magazine's test kitchens.

I started with just once recipe here and there (mixed in with a lot of takeout) and my husband was thrilled. I use this mag a lot when I'm feeling uninspired.

Here is the link to subscribe, or just check out a ton of good recipes: http://bestsimplerecipes.com

GOOD LUCK!

Same here. Most of what I know, I learned from my husband. I do have some cookbooks and many recipes that I have cut out and it helps. Just allow yourself to have some mishaps. When I first started, I got a little frustrated at times. I wanted things to be perfect because that's the type of person I am. Mistake number one. I found the more I cooked, the more confident I became. So be patient and practice, your skills will come.
