GINGERBREAD

1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup light molasses
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees (175 degrees C). Grease and lightly flour one 8 inch square baking pan.
Cream shortening and sugar until light. Add the egg and molasses and beat thoroughly.
Sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, ground ginger, and ground cinnamon.
Bring water to a boil and add alternately with flour mixture to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy.
This time of year when it's cold outside and you want something to eat for dessert, "GINGERBREAD" is great all by itself or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream or a glass of ice cold milk, hot tea or coffee. It's so delicious with a great flavor of spices.
Here is a recipe I hope you like it:
American Gingerbread
6 tablespoons or 3/4 stick butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground/powdered ginger
1 teaspoon ground/powdered cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream the butter until it is light add the sweetners. 1/2 cup at a time, and continue beating until light. Add the egg and beat until fluffy. Blend the dry ingredients together. Ad them to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk.
Pour into a lightly greased 9 inch. cake pan. or more traditionally a 10 1/2 inch iron skillet or "spider" as they were called and bake for 40 to 45 minutes.
Note...you can add some extras to it if you like. For example:
raisins, walnuts, grated orange peel not the white pith, note also if you do not have buttermilk you can use sour milk, or sour cream. To sour the milk add a little vinegar like 1 1/2 teaspoon per 8 ounces... to the regular sweet milk and let it sit a few minutes and it will start to thicken and sour.
Some people like to dust it with powder sugar or 10 x it's called. Or you can make a glaze of powdered sugar and orange juice just enough juice added so it's pourable.
good luck if you need some help with it my id is:
