I have had some shrimp froze for quite sometime is it still good?!

Question: One of the best ways to tell if it is still ok, is to thaw the meat and smell it. If it has an ammonia smell to it, it has gone bad. Also, if once it is thawed, it shows white dry areas on the meat, it is not edible. When dealing with any food item, use the saying I tell my line and prep cooks. WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT. No amount of grocery money is worth your health.

i dread to think. at worst it will make you a bit sick but if it was frozen straight from being bought then i would take the risk. ifit has been frozen for years i would be sceptical though!!

As long as it is sealed it will last 3 months, but you could push it out a little longer.

edit

If they are pink, they pre-cooked.

that depends on how long i guess, since it was frozen i'd say you could try it?

Well I dont know for certain how long "quite some time is" but a good rule of thumb would be 3-6 months depending on how much the freezer gets opened.

Well, How long do you have them in the freezer?
Are they well protected or is there signs of freeezer burns?
You can usually keep shrimps for a while if they have been properly processed.

The thing about frozen food is it doesn't go "bad", as in it will make you sick, it just loses it's flavor and texture over time. So while it won't harm you to eat, it might not taste as good as if it had only been frozen for a short period. That said, I buy shrimp frozen in bulk when it goes on sale, and it often sits in my freezer for as long as 6-7months before I get around to using it - still tastes fine to me!

If the shrimp have been frozen solid, without thawing at all they'll be edible. The texture may suffer a little, but thaw them quickly over cold water and serve immediately.

However, if the shrimp have thawed even the least bit (like the freezer door got left open), don't use them at all. Shellfish are notorious for spoiling and people getting really sick.

If you don't know how long you've had it ("quite sometime" is pretty vague), you could thaw some of it and check for off odor and/or freezer burn (looks like white, dry spots on the food). If it has either one of these things, pitch it.

No matter what, throwing a few shrimp out is better than making yourself and/or others sick.

Good luck!
