Egg Nog....Confused about it?!

Question: I bought some in the store, on the ingredients I didn't see "Egg" listed, why is this? I thought it was raw egg and milk? Help!

Not all manufacturers of egg nog still put egg in it. Homemade Egg nog should have eggs in it however, at least all the recipes I have seen for it. Also to note that in grocery stores Egg nog does not contain liquor in it as it does in most homemade recipes!

If it was store bought and contained raw egg then it would have given you salmonella poisoning. It probably contains a similar binding agent.

its probably a substitute ingredient.

The USDA estimates that only in 20,000 eggs contains salmonella.

Nevertheless, because there is a slight risk they would never put raw eggs into a product designed for direct consumption.

If egg nog was raw egg and milk, I would not drink it.

Not all egg nogg has raw egg for one, there are recipes that involve cooking it like a custard. Many store bought nogs have other thickening agents, particularly ones that are labeled low or non fat.

Commercial sometimes have an artificial egg flavoring, due to the salmonella risk in drinking raw eggs. Real homemade would have eggs in it, but a manufacturer wouldn't want the lawsuits.

Consuming raw or undercooked eggs is not advised because of salmonella bacteria. I imagine the recipe has been adapted for health reasons.

Bought Egg Nog has thickenerslike gelatine so it lasts longer. Remember- "Egg Cream" doesn't have eggs Or cream in it, so names mean nothing.
