Why does chicken noodle soup help a "cold"?!

Question: Well I hope someone can answer with the technical details, I don't know those.
But I remember reading somewhere that something in the chicken helps relieve the symptons of a cold, so it's not the soup itself but the chicken in it.

it has natural penicillin in it

Actually if you think about it, chicken soup is probably the most common soup a person would eat/drink unlike other broths. When you are sick you need to have fluid/liquid in your body because if you have a fever, water escapes your body. Therefore; eating/drinking almost any kind of liquidy soup is good for you. chicken broth soup is good because it has protein and it hydrates your body. A lot of people go to chinese restaurants and eat egg drop soup or wonton soup and that helps as well. Another thing is my family makes a ton of different kinds of soup from veggie, fish, chicken, beef, etc and they always tell me its good for you and I think it's because our body needs fluid to heal.

It's hot and a bit bland in terms of heavy ingredients...It's meant to warm the insides and be light enough to "keep down" for those in a nautions condition.

it's given with love against all odds against an illness deemed incurable

Chicken soup is good because Grandma says so. Scientists say it's because the boiled chicken has anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit mucous production in your body. Common sense tells you that the warm salty broth feels good on a scratchy throat, and the steam going up in your nose helps open the sinuses.(And it tastes good).

I don't think it helps you in any medical way, but it is a big slice of americana. It just makes you feel safe, warm and fuzzy.

i think its an old wives tale. but it sure does taste good when you have a cold and makes you feel like you are being hugged by your mother. just like when you were little, it is a comfort food ,also it makes your nose run and thats a good thing to get everything out.but dont forget to wipe your nose so it doesnt drip in your soup. enjoy
