How long do pecans last unshelled?!


Question: i've heard of walnuts and pecans going rancid....but how and when? i have a box of shelled pecans that i leave in my pantry. i've had the box for two weeks. are they still good? i need the pecans to make mexican wedding cookies.

2 weeks is not too old, if they haven't been opened. I keep them in the freezer even after opening and tightly sealed. They last a long time. You are so lucky....I know about the mammoth size of the Texas pecans!

If you keep them in an air tight container, and freeze them, they will last for months. The trick is to keep the oils in the nuts from going rancid... Air does that, so keep them away from air.

Yes they will be good for a while. But if your real worried they freeze really good. Just a good freezer bag. We've had pecans in the freezer for over a year and they were still good.

Yes, your box of pecans are still good. They would last a year or more in the freezer, however, in an airtight bag. You can even freeze them chopped for your cookies, to make it easier at baking time.

In the shell? Probably not more than a month or two, and that's at cool room temp.
