Can I use a cake mix from a box to make a tiered cake?!

Question: I really love the Wilton Romantic Cake Set and want to make it for my step daughter's birthday next week. I've never made a tiered cake with a mix before and wondered if anyone has any tips on how to do this. TIA!

It's totally possible, because I've done it quite a bit! I almost always use cake mixes for my cakes. I do prefer Duncan Hines, because they generally turn out the best for me. It says to reduce the water you add to the mix by (I think) two tablespoons when you make the cake. Check the directions on the box for specifics (especially on the white mixes). If you go to Wilton's site (http://www.wilton.com/wedding/cakeinfo/c... they have a list that shows you about how much cake batter it takes to fill a single layer for each size and shape pan that they have. Each cake mix generally makes 5 and 1/2 cups of batter. DH also recommends that you bake the cake at a lower temperature (I think 325 degrees instead of 350?) but I don't notice a huge difference. And BTW, the Wilton site also has tables showing cake cutting guides which can come in handy if you're like me at my family's weddings, when I get volunteered to serve the cake I made for them.

May take several boxes.

Yes, it will turn out fine. Just don’t make it too far in advance because you don’t want it to dry out. Try to make it the night/afternoon before. I highly recommend getting The Cake Mix Doctor cookbook. I’ve made about ? of the book and her recipes are amazing!!! I get compliments every single time and they do NOT taste like a mix. Super easy too. The hardest part about the cake is transporting it. Do you have to take it anywhere? If so, keep the tiers separate and purchase cake boxes. Assemble at the location and have extra dowel rods / inserts to make sure your tiers are supported. I’m sure your step-daughter will be very impressed!

you need multiple pans of different sizes to make the tiered effect. you may need more cake mix also. make your cakes and let cool completely before stacking and frosting.

You have the web site...??? why ask us?
I have not baked a frosted cake in 25 years..
the secret ,,,measure,,,for the layers use toothpicks to index where the filling will go... Use the tools from Wilton to make any raised layers (plastic columns)
PS an edit added
you do know that the boxed cake mixes will last about 10 years without loosing any quality...???
regardless of the MFG dates..
Nothing can get in or out of that plastic bag..
buy on sale!!! Last summer $0.86 ea I have 3 white left...
Happy Hoildays ..?

Yes. You'll need more than one box though.
