How should you store your used frying oil?!

Question: At Thanksgiving is deep fried a turkey in peanut oil. When i was done i strained the oil through a piece of cheese cloth and returned the oil to the original plastic container it came in. Since then i have kept that container of oil in my garage which is cool, but definately not cold. My question is, is the oil still safe to use?

Yes, it should be fine. Try to keep it at around 45. One good thing about peanut oil is that you'll know when it starts to go rancid.

If you're only going to us the oil for deep frying this method of storage is fine. Oil should keep for 6 -9 months without a problem. You could actually use it once it turns but it will probably impart some nasty flavor on what ever you're frying.

The reason i keep the oil in the garage is it is the coolest part of the house, and i dont have room in my fridge to keep 3.5 gallons of oil in it. Report It

  • It should be fine. I would have done the same.

I do the same thing... and continued to use the oil for about 6 months. Very easy to tell when it goes bad..smells bad and taste bad.

The filtering and cool storage will extend the life.

Instead put it in a coffee can if there is clean oil in the original container other than that its fine just make sure you strain it you could also strain it using 2 paper towels rubberband them to the top than pour the oil in the can

OK, I will be the idiot who asks the obvious question! Why keep your cooking oil in the garage?I always keep mine in the fridge to keep it fresh, but i've heard you shouldn't, so as my family are all still alive, I wonder why.? You have got it right about straining it each time & returning to original container. Replace with new oil every few weeks.
