Answer needed from an experience cake decorator!?!
Answers: I am going to be making an "over the hill" themed cake this afternoon. The bottom layer is a large rectangle which I will cover with white rolled fondant tinted green (to resemble the colour of grass). The top is going to be the "hill" which I am using the wonder mold for. Can I use chocolate buttercream under the green tinted fondant without it showing through? I would prefer the chocolate buttercream since it is a chocolate cake and most people prefer the taste of it to regular buttercream. The only reason I am even bothering with the fondant is because it is a stacked cake and I need the "hill" cake to be easily removed when they go to cut the bottom layer cake. I find putting a cake on top of another using buttercream just leaves a big mess under the cake if it is removed. Thanks in advance!
Whether or not the chocolate buttercream shows through is going to depend on how deep the color of your "grass" is, and how thick the fondant is rolled out. As long as your fondant isn't really really thin, you should be okay. Plus, if it shows through in spots, it will just look like the ground under the dirt. If you're still worried about it and unsure, you could try spreading a little buttercream on a plate or a scrap piece of cardboard, and put a small piece of fondant over it, and see how it looks. Good luck, I've made a cake similar to this, and it turned out great!!
