How can you tell one brand of potato from another?!

Question: I always buy the white potatoes as opposed to red. But how can you tell if there are Maris Piper/White potatoes etc? Apart from reading what is says on the bags they come in.

mainly in the taste, some potatoes are sweeter then others, i usually just buy the cheapest in the shop, the way i see it they all do what you need them to do, so why pay more

you cant even trust the bags these days. a few months ago it was on tv that major supermarkets were selling crappy potatos in maris piper bags.

All potato varieties are distinctive, but it's not always easy to tell one from another. They all have a characteristic shape - some are more spherical, others flatter, more oval, or maybe knobbly or long. As you have already discovered the skin colour also varies.
It's difficult to be certain which variety a potato is purely visually, because there are several varieties to any particular shape or colour.
Another difference you may notice is the colour and texture of the flesh when raw and when cooked. Potatoes for salad use are usually firm and waxy, those for general use are often described as "floury" when cooked - these are good for boiling/mashing, roasting and baking.
Finally, you musn't overlook the flavour. Those varieties having a sweeter taste are best for chips, roasting and baking.

From experience, the best thing is to try to use different varieties when you have the chance and try to prepare them in lots of diferent ways. Eventually you'll be an expert!
