Is vinaigrette the same as Italian dressing?!

Question: I have a recipe that calls for 1/2 c. of vinaigrette, but none of the dressings at the store are simply vinaigrette. They're all "red wine" or "balsamic" or "raspberry."

all of your other answers are correct it seems, at least to individual tastes.
To answer your question about what you are making, I would feel comfortable going with a store bought Italian. We make something similar at the lodge I work at and we use Kraft Zesty Italian.

No, sort of. Vinaigrette is made up of oil and vinegar some salt and pepper, the basic. Dressings like Italian dressings are made up of a little heavier oil, seasonings, and something to make it thicker. Use what you like.

vinaigrette can mean any salad dressing but if a recipe called for it, I would go with standard italian

use italian dressing, its pretty much the same thing with some extra herbs and spices thrown in. Or just make your own by whisking together some oil and vinegar.

Yes and No. Italian IS a vinaigrette but a vinaigrette isn't necessarily Italian dressing. A vinaigrette is any type of dressing with the two main components of oil and vinegar, The ratio can vary from 4:1 to 1:1. It is usually vinegar, oil, mustard, chopped shallot, salt and pepper and perhaps some chopped herb. that is the classic.

No, it's not the same thing.

A vinaigrette is made simply of vinegar, salt, and oil, with the seasonings of your choice.

It's really simple to make, the oil to vinegar ratio is 2 to 1.

I think Tony has a very good explanation of what a vinaigrette is. In your case, however, I would not use Italian dressing for your dish- the flavor is too distinctive and it won't work. If you're going to buy one, go with the "red wine" as it will be the most mild and most versatile.

Tony nailed this one down.........and nice of you to tell us what you're making, a lot of folks don't, you can go with the basic Italian, but I think you cold black bean salad would be great with a red wine vinaigrette.......Enjoy......could you please share the recipe with us??? Thanks.....

Christopher

YES IT WILL DO THE SAME THING!!!!!

Vinaigrette does not have to contain oil as others have said. Italian dressing is a from of vinaigrette yes. But I make a mandarin orange vinaigrette using only mandarin oranges, honey, brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. Not only is it delicious but it is also fat free and you can make this using any fruit.

Red wine vinegar will be good, try adding some fresh lime juice to it also, that will go great with your salad.
