How do you test a candy thermometer?!

Question: if the thermometer shows temps down into the 30's you can put ice in a glass. fill in with water (more ice than water) and put the thermometer in. it should read 32 degrees F. (or zero degrees C)
then you can calibrate from there if it is off.
if it isn't scaled down to freezing, you can boil water and put the therm. in. it should read 212 F or 100 C.

EVERY time I use the thing, I test to see where the boiling point is today. I live over a mile high and it is very necessary.

Put a couple of cups of water in the candy kettle. Bring to boil with thermometer clinging to the edge of the kettle and see where the boiling point is today.

Sea level is boiling point of 212, over a mile high this can be down to 185!!! Then subtract the difference from the number you are to cook the candy to in the recipe. Perfect divinity every time!!!
