If a shallot is moldy on the end, can I still use it?!

Question: I cut off the moldy part and the rest seems fine. It's the last one and I can't go to the store. :(

sure you can use it. What do you think I do and you're still fine :)

Yes, it's fine. I do this all the time with onions, garlic, etc. Just cut off the moldy end. Make sure the rest is okay.

Next time, keep it in a dry and cool place. I usually take any sort of plastic wrap off of it, because if you leave the plastic wrap on, it sometimes helps the mold to spread.

I really wouldn't use it. I cook a lot and if an onion/shallot has mold on it, I throw it out. Mold spores are really tiny and once a piece of food has it on it, it usually means that the whole piece is pooched. Unless it is cheese!

yes. cut off 1/4 inch past the spoiled then rinse well. your fine.

Yes........by all means, just discard the moldy part and proceed with your recipe.....We've gotten to love shallots so much, that I try and sub the out for onions and garlic whenever I can......BTW, what are you making with the shallots??? Just wondering..... ;)

Christopher

Yes, just cut off the moldy part, rinse clean and use the remaining part that's not molded.
