What do rutabaga and parsnips taste like?!
Thanks in advance.
Answers: I have a recipe for a yankee pot roast that calls for rutabaga and parsnip, I've never had either and were just wondering what they tasted like before I make the recipe.
Thanks in advance.
rutabagas are the same as turnips if you've had them..
parsnips are those white carrots.. they taste kinda similar.. but i think they are a bit sweeter
Rutabagas (turnips) are a very strong tasting vegetable (think brussel sprouts kind of strong). I find people either love it or hate it....no in between! You can leave it out of the recipe if you are not sure, but, personally I really like them (never had parsnips) so the only way to find out how they taste is to try them.
Rutabaga is a cross hybrid of a turnip and cabbage. They are known to have a sweet or a bitter taste.
They are denser and sweeter than turnips. They are great cooked like mashed potatoes....mixed with butter and a little cream, S&P, then whipped. (my favorite way to cook them)
For the taste: The smaller young ones have a sweet taste. (look for firm smooth skinned roots that feel heavy for their size)
As they age and get bigger they have a "woody" tasted. (bigger and tough skinned-they feel light for their size)
I think they would taste good mixed in a yankee pot roast, because they will blend with all the other flavors and juices.
That's what cooking is all about; experimenting with foods, tastes and textures.. Just try it, you and your family might just love it.
(I'm gonna try them in a pot roast too, thanks for the great idea)
Rutabagas are similar to turnips, but I think they have a bitter taste. Parsnip roots are white and look like a carrot. They have a sweeter flavor. Parsnips give soups a wonderful flavor. My Hungarian granmother added them to her homemade soups. I think the parsnips would add great flavor to a yankee pot roast.
