Are fruitcakes supposed to be really hard or am I just a bad cook?!

It depends on how much fruit you put in. The fruit in fruitcake is usually "gummy" in texture - like those candied cherries. Also, if you added nuts that would make it harder to cut too. Generally, you will find a typical cake texture, that might even crumble slightly, but could be a little difficult to slice if it is jam-packed full of fruit and nuts.

You may have overmixed the batter if it's hard.

depends of how much you put in maybe you over cooked it try putting it in your microwave before you serve it so that it slices esier good luck

If you don't like them hard, try a boiled fruit cake, the fruit is boiled with butter, brown sugar and wine before adding to the dry ingredients and baking in the usual way.

Is it hard or just dense? Fruit cake is very "heavy"
