Dear Gawd, don't double the water, it will never bake. You are cooking it at too high a heat for too long. Some ovens are too hot so adjust it by lowering the temp. 25 degrees and keep an eye on it. When the top bounces back to the touch of your finger, it's done.

Either you put it too long, too much fat or you have too much heat

What kind of cake are you talking about....
I'm assuming a cheesecake b/c you mentioned the water...just lower the temp 25 degrees, but first get an oven thermometer and check to see if your oven is accurate or not...
if you talking about a regular cake, as in like a box mix cake then you don't double the water....it won't bake....try lowering the temp to 325 and using the Wilton Bake Even strips...or are you baking it too long perhaps?....stick a toothpick in the middle and pull it out, if it comes out clean then the cake is done, if not then bake for 5 more min.

Are you spraying with oil on the sides of the baking pan? It might cause the burnt edges of a cake. Next time, Spray only at the bottom and try.

Good Luck.

If all the other advice here fails, keep checking it, don't always go by the time a recipe tells you. And make sure your oven temp is correct

Are you using a dark metal pan? Dark metal pans burn nearly everything I've put in them. Try baking in a glass pan or light colored pan instead?
