The difference is the soda bread and potato bread- you've got to have these two for a proper Ulster (or Irish) Fry, ( I think they are hard to come by in England, Scotland or Wales.

Ulster Fry is - Bacon, sausage, egg, tomato, soda bread, potato bread - those are the essentials and must all be fried (grilling the bacon and sausage is cheating). You can add baked beans and mushrooms as well if you're really starving.

If you want to avoid heart attacks, only have a full Ulster about three or four times a year. :)

I forgot to add that a full Ulster Fry is the guaranteed cure for a hangover (provided you can keep it down).

Ulster Fry
2 Bacons
2 Sausages
1 Vegetable Roll (sausage meat mixed with scallions (spring onions))
2 Tomatoes
4 Mushrooms
2 Eggs
1 Soda Farl (the flat version of soda bread)
2 Potato Farls (Irish potato bread)
Slice Tomatoes in half, place in low heat frying pan with a little oil.

Place Vegetable Roll and Sausages into frying pan and cook on low heat.

Slice Mushrooms in half and pop into frying pan.

Place bacon under a medium-heat grill.

Move tomatoes under grill with bacon.

Slice Soda farls in half through the middle, exposing the inner bread.

Cut Potato Farls in half, to create triangles.

Remove sausage, vegetable roll and mushrooms from frying pan. Keep warm under the grill.

Crack eggs into frying pan and cook gently.

Remove eggs once cooked.

Add more oil to pan and turn heat to high.

When hot, but not smoking, add potato and soda farls to pan. Turn constantly to cook evenly.

Remove when golden brown.

A Full English has black pudding in the recipe...not too much different though.

An Ulster fry is a dish of fried food that is popular throughout the province of Ulster in Ireland. A traditional Ulster fry consists of bacon, eggs, sausages (either pork or beef), the farl form of soda bread (the farl split in half crossways to expose the inner bread and then fried with the exposed side down), potato bread and tomatoes. Other common components include mushrooms, wheaten bread or pancakes. All this is traditionally fried up in lard. Despite, or perhaps because of, the popular comic reference to the dish as a "heart-attack on a plate",many people in Ulster have taken to grilling most of the ingredients, or use healthier alternatives to lard such as sunflower or vegetable oil.

Ulster Fry is not considered solely a breakfast dish as it is often served for lunch and dinner in households and cafés around the province. Emigrants have also popularised the serving of an Ulster fry outside Northern Ireland.

Recipe:

Ingredients
8 rashers of streaky bacon
2 tbsp vegetable oil
4 rashers of back bacon
2-4 ripe tomatoes, halved
salt and fresh ground black pepper
2 Irish soda farl, halved then quartered
4 quarters of potato bread
1 tsp unsalted butter
8 fresh free-range organic eggs
2 tbsp water

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4.

2. Fry the streaky bacon in a large frying pan with the oil. When almost cooked add the back bacon and the tomato halves, seasoned with salt and pepper.

3. Cook until the streaky rashers are crisp, the back bacon cooked but not dried out and the tomatoes are just beginning to soften. Transfer them all to a warm oven, reserving the fat in the saucepan.

4. Take the soda and potato farls and dip them in the fat left in the frying pan, allowing them to soak up a little, then drain away the excess and wipe the pan dry.

5. Dry-fry the pieces of bread gently in the frying pan until they are starting to crisp up. Remove and reserve in the oven.

6. To fry the eggs, heat the butter in a non-stick frying pan until it is sizzling. Crack the eggs carefully into the pan, add in the water and a little salt and cover the pan.

7. Allow the eggs to cook slowly for about 2 minutes or until they are cooked to your taste.

8. Serve at once on warm plates, dividing the bacon, fried bread, tomatoes and eggs between them.

omg my mouths watering fried soda bread and potato bread soaked in the fat of the sausages and bacon. see you later im off to do some for tea lol. ps it has to be all cooked in beef dripping. heart attack on a plate but who cares its delicious
