I found a recipe for German Chocolate frosting-what is a substitute for evaporated milk?!

Question: 1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup sugar

3 beaten egg yolks

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/3 cup Coconut

1 cup chopped pecans

Answers: 1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup sugar

3 beaten egg yolks

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/3 cup Coconut

1 cup chopped pecans

half & half or other cream works well as a substitute for evaporated milk. Don't use the cream substitute stuff.

From Cook's Thesaurus:

"evaporated milk = condensed milk = concentrated milk Notes: This is sold in cans, and comes either whole or nonfat. Don't confuse it with sweetened condensed milk, which has lots of sugar and is not a good substitute. If a recipe calls for condensed milk, it's almost certainly referring to sweetened condensed milk. Evaporated milk is sold with varying amounts of butterfat, ranging from whole evaporated milk with about 8% to skim evaporated milk with about 0.5%. To reconstitute evaporated milk, combine it with an equal amount of water. Substitutes: half & half OR milnot (available in Britain; whips better than evaporated milk) OR cream (higher in fat, but works well in pumpkin pies)"

Hope that helps!

personally i would not sub nothing for the evap. milk....its what makes it so delish...its very rich and creamy....good luck.

If you don't have any evaporated milk, here's a substitute:

7/8 cup of milk
1/3 cup powdered milk

Mix together and let set in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes then use as you would evaporated milk.
