Sheperd's pie is a very simple dish of ground beef topped with mashed potatoes. Different variations add other things, so you can play around with it, but that's the basic idea.

2 SHEPHERDS AND A POUND OF SPUDS ...add salt to taste

or real pie is

mash, minced lamb(not beef cos that makes it a cottage pie ok ),onion, gravy and carrots .

Last answer more or less right. But - shepherd's pie is made with ground or minced lamb or mutton. Same made with beef is cottage pie.

Ground beef browned with onion and seasoning. Top with mashed potatoes and cheese. Bake until cheese is melted.

Main ingredients are Lamb Mince (Shepherd!) and mashed potato. I add onion gravy and peas to cooked mince to keep it moist and top with mashed potato. I also add a little horseradish to the mashed potato.
Dot the mashed potao with a little butter and cook in oven until the top is slightly crisp. great comfort food.

Shepherd's pie is a traditional English dish that consists of a bottom layer of minced (ground) meat covered with mashed potato and then a layer of cheese.

This is how I make it.

I start by browning the beef (1lb) in a pan with finely chopped onions and then simmered in stock. 2 Frozen Boxes of Niblets Corn & Butter Sauce, follow directions on package. You can also use the same amount of Cream Style Corn. 1 pkg of instant potatoes I use Sour Cream & Chives, follow directions on package. Then layer the meat, corn, potatoes in a 8"x8" (2qt) Dish. Bake until potatoes are golden brown. 350 for approx. 30 minutes.

One of the meals my friends always request me to make! I do a turkey version, a vegetarian version, and a beef version. The traditional way is with beef, so here it is:

Either boil potatoes for mashing or use instant potatoes (of course the fresh are best). Line your casserole dish with the mashed potatoes. Buy beef that is used for stew ... a good quality beef that is cut in cubes. Brown the beef in a skillet.

Cut carrots, celery, and add peas to the beef mixture when ready put this mixture over the mashed potatoes, add another layer of potatoes and then top with the remaining beef / veg/ mixture. Top with gravy ... Guinness Gravy is best! http://www.thespicehouse.com/recipes/gra...
But any beef-based gravy is good.

Cook in 350 degree oven for 45 min-and hour or until potatoes look just a bit browned. After removing from the oven, I often top with shredded Blarney cheese.

Hope this helps!

Here's how I make it . . .

Saute a chopped onion with a little garlic till soft, remove from pan. Then cook 1 lb ground beef till browned, remove from pan. In the same pan add 2 cups of beef broth mixed with 3Tbsp cornstarch, whisking so it is smooth. Boil until it thickens to a gravy.

In a casserole dish mix together: onions, cooked meat, gravy, mixed veggies (you can use frozen or canned, if you use fresh then you need to pre-cook them a little), and salt and pepper to taste.

Top with mashed potatoes and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

This is a great meal to make ahead and have ready in the fridge. I do it often on nights I know we will be getting home late so that I just need to pop it in the oven.
