Gingerbread houses can be super tricky. I worked at a bakery that made TONS on them for xmas. Our icing consisted of powdered sugar and pasterized egg whites. We did not measure, but I would say thick is better since you want the candies to stay put. Place powdered sugar in mixing bowl and gradually add egg whites. The key is to mix it a good while til it becomes shiny and somewhat holds its thick consistency. We constructed the house, iced and decorated the roof (twizzlers, pretzels, shredded wheat cereal, gum drops, etc.) let it dry and them finished windows and the yards. Any candy that is bright, bite sized, and holds its shape is great!!!! MOST OF ALL, HAVE FUN!!! Perfect is not always better when it comes to gingerbread houses:-)

A good idea is to include corn starch in your icing-acts like a glue but still edible. Also, ribbon candy can easily be broken to make colorful windows, walkways, etc. I have lots more ideas if you want them!
