Pre-cooked spiral ham question?!

Question: I want to get one of the already cooked spiral hams (to save time) but would like it to taste homemade by making a glaze w/ pineapples and cherries (per request from a family member) Does anyone have any clue on how to do this? What do I do, just stick the pineapples and cherries on the ham and heat up? Isn't there brown sugar involved somewhere?? Help =(

All of the spiral hams comes with a basic recipe on the cellophane wrapper. DON'T throw it out!

But in the event you do, all you need to do is check out foodtv.com or allrecipes.com, or a host of other recipe web sites out there.

Generally, a glaze has some kind of brown sugar or molasses/butter mixture to help the coating stick to the ham. pineapples & cherries do sound yummy! Never tried it, but has a sweet flavor I bet. The glaze recipe is usually easy like simmer teh ingredients on low in a sauce pan, brush over with a basting brush, cover with foil.

Merry Christmas! Hope your ham comes out spectacular!

CHERRY-PINEAPPLE GLAZE

juice from 1 (10 oz.) jar of maraschino cherries
juice from 1 large can pineapple tidbits
splash of orange juice
cornstarch
orange juice

Combine the juices and put in a microwave-safe dish. Heat the juices to boiling--about 7 minutes. Put 1 T. of cornstarch into a cup and add just a little orange juice until smooth. Put the cornstarch/juice mixture into the bowl containing the hot juices. Let this come to a boil again. Cornstarch will thicken the juices into a wonderful glaze. If the glaze is not thick enough, add more of the cornstarch/orange juice mixture

Pour over ham and bake

Pineapple juice and brown sugar to make the glaze. And what the other person said about adding juice from the cherries. I normally just do pineapple. Continuosly baste throughout cooking. Add the pineapple rings and cherries at the last 15 minutes. Since it's a pre-cooked ham I would suggest only baking for about an hour depending on the size.

With spiral hams, putting the fruit on it is sometimes difficult because you need to be able to adhere the slices of pineapples to something which is usually cloves or a toothpick. Since the ham is in slices the toothpick or cloves just slip through and the fruit slips off.

I will suggest making a glaze with brown sugar about half a cup, to one can of drained crushed pineapple (7 ounces) and two tablespoons of butter. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the brown sugar and pineapple and bring to a low simmer. Heat your ham as directed on the wrapper. Use the glaze as the last step, you can add a few maraschino cherries for color too. Double the recipe if you have a big ham.

Hope this helps! Merry Christmas

HOLIDAY HAM
1 country style smoked ham
2 c. water
20 - 30 whole cloves
one (16 ounce) can sliced pineapple rings
1 cup Maraschino cherries, cut into halves
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flour
sprinkling of garlic powder
sprinkling of onion powder
sprinkling of black pepper
olive oil spray
Place ham in roaster. Add 2 cups water, and cover roaster.
Bake in a 325°F oven, allowing about 21 minutes per pound for a large ham, about 25 minutes per pound for a smaller (up to 12 pounds) ham or half ham. If the ham has an exposed bone, cover this with foil. Keep an eye on the ham as it cooks and spray occasionally with olive oil during the first part of the cooking. Continue roasting until a thermometer inserted in center reads 160 degrees. Be sure thermometer is not touching bone.
When ham is done, remove from oven. Lift off rind. Using a sharp knife, score fat surface crosswise (into intersecting squares) and dot with cloves at each intersection.
To prepare the ham coating, combine brown sugar and flour. Rub this mixture over the scored ham. Sprinkle over lightly with garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
Place a pineapple slice on the ham so that one of the cloves will be in the center of the circle. Cover the clove with a Maraschino cherry half. Each cherry half should be placed in the center of a pineapple slice. Continue until ham is covered decoratively with pineapple slices and cherries. Brown, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes in a 400°F oven or until ham takes on a beautiful glazed coloring.
Note: Cut any remaining pineapple slices into halves and use to decorate around the ham at the bottom of the serving plate, alternating with sprigs of parsley or kale for garnish.
