What do Americans usually cook for New Years?!
Answers: This coming year will be the 1st year I spend alone. Earlier today, my family upset me, so it's better that I spend the holidays in solitude. I don't know what the New Years meal traditions are.
Awwww. It's never good to be without family on the holidays. I am alone tonight only because I have been sick, so the rest of my family is celebrating without me. I hope you enjoy your holiday, either way.
New Year's traditions vary. Usually ham is served, cooked with a nice fruity glaze (last year I used dark cherry preserves mixed with orange marmalade for the glaze and it was the best we had ever had!.) Often the ham is studded with cloves, with pineapple slices and maraschino cherries for garnish. The usual winter vegetables are served (sweet potato or squash, white potatoes, a green vegetable, and anything else that you like to eat. My sister likes to have a crown pork roast (with the center filled with stuffing) mashed potatoes and vegetables. And some people will make a turkey for New Year's dinner. Take your choice, or start your own tradition, lol.
We fondue... most people eat junk.
We have pork and sauerkraut. Here is a recipe that my whole family loves, even the ones who don't like sauerkraut:
3 to 4 lb. pork loin roast
1 lg. can sauerkraut
2 lg. apples
2 lg. onions
1/3 c. brown sugar
1 to 2 cans beer
In large cake pan place roast. Pour sauerkraut around roast. Quarter apple and onion (don't need to peel apple). Place around on top of sauerkraut. Sprinkle with brown sugar and pour on 1 can of beer cover pan, sealing sides with foil. Bake in 350 degree oven for 3 to 4 hours depending on size of the roast. Add the 2nd can of beer if too dry. When ready to serve mix sauerkraut, apples and onions together
Family Tradition with my parents and my in-laws are both Prime Rib.
I would say the most common is probably prime rib.
try this
BAKED SCROD SUPREME
1 lb. fresh fish (scrod)
1 pkg. chopped spinach, thawed
Butter
Salt and pepper
Garlic
Parsley
Paprika
Swiss cheese or Cheddar
Spray Pam in bottom of baking dish. Place fish in pan. Sprinkle with seasonings. Place spinach on top of fish. Dot with a little butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Spread cheese (use grated cheese) on top of fish. Return to oven until cheese melts. Bake in 350 degree oven.
We always do some form of pork.
As the old sayings go...
Eat pork and you will live high off the hog for the year!
Don't eat chicken or you'll be scratching for a living!
Ham with Au Gratin Potatoes.
Hot Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream.
I can't say that New Year's Eve really tends to have a national traditional food in the US. The only traditional thing really is something to toast the new year with at midnight: champagne is traditional, if you're of age to drink alcohol, though anything drinkable would be acceptable. Otherwise, it's usually whatever party munchies appeal to the host, since many people are attending or throwing parties on that night.
Now, there are often some traditional foods for the next day, to bring luck for the new year, though they vary depending on the area. Southerners may eat greens (like kale or collard greens), representing wealth to come in the year; also, black eyed peas are supposed to bring luck for the year. I even found the local Jason's Deli gives customers a free cup of black eyed peas with purchase, on New Year's Day! One of my cousins married into a family that ate pickled herring for luck.... eew. I'm not sure where that tradition comes from.
We do surf and turf
in case you don't know what this is, its, steak and lobster tail .
also here in texas you most cook blackeyed peas to
have good luck throughtout the new year its a texas tradition. So no matter where you go and what kind of food you have they will be serving blackeyed peas to go with it.
it doesn't matter about the food what matters is the dessert you could make lots of jellos with alcholo in it and lots of other yumm things
I don't think there really is a national tradition. We usually have pizza on NYEve and king crab on NYDay. We figure any year starting with king crab can't be all bad.
Other's I know have Bratwurst and saurkraut
