2 day old mussels - cook or trash?!

Question: Neighbor gave me fresh mussels Christmas eve morn - picked up from market that day. We were leaving town so I put them in fridge for 2 days. Usually I cook fresh shellfish right away, so I'm leery of cooking these today. So, cook, or discard?

If they were fresh, they should be ok today. You might want to cook them up, if they are bad, they won't open up. You will know if they aren't good, because they will be closed.

discard to be safe

I would discard them, no need to risk making yourself sick. My therory is, when in doubt, throw it out !

I wouldn't eat them. Better safe than sorry.

if they're still alive I would cook them, try cooking and if they open up, eat'em

If they don't open their shells, then they are not fresh. Don't eat them. If they open their shells, then they are okay to eat.

Don't eat them if you are not 100% sure that they're fresh.

Personally, I would throw them away.
You shouldn't risk it with shellfish.

Cook them.
The ones that you buy in the store are not fresh out of the sea either but people buy them all the time and the mussels are just fine. Just don't eat those that don't open.
