What do you use a Dutch Oven for?!
Answers: I know this is a dumb question but is it for stews or oven cooking?
When we smoke bongs in the car, with all windows up, doors locked and the cabin gets full of smoke, we call that a "dutchie", so i'd have to go for oven cooking!.. but a stew, with slowly bubbling liquid, producing smoke\steam on top, sounds pretty accuate too!
I made a no Knead bread in it once.
If it has handles that will melt then it is for stews and soups etc. If it is ovenproof then it can be used as a large casserole dish too.
A Dutch oven is a thick-walled iron (usually cast iron) cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid. They are well suited for long, slow cooking, such as in making roasts, stews, and casseroles.
Modern Dutch ovens designed for use on the cooktop or in the oven are typically smooth-bottomed. Some older styles, such as the unglazed ovens by Lodge, CampChef, and Wagner, retain the bale handle, while others, such as the enameled versions by Staub, Sante, and le Creuset, have two loop handles. Modern ovens may also be made of aluminum or ceramic. Le Creuset, a famous maker of enameled Dutch ovens, refers to their ovens as "French ovens", or in the UK as "casserole dishes".
When cooking over a campfire, it is possible to use old-style lipped cast iron dutch ovens as true baking ovens, to prepare biscuits, cakes, breads, pizzas and even pies. A smaller baking pan can be placed inside the ovens, used and replaced with another as the first batch is completed. It is also possible to stack dutch ovens on top of each other, conserving the heat that would normally rise from the hot coals on the top. These stacks can be as high as 5 or 6 pots.
I have my great grandmothers, you can use it for oven or on top of the slow for slow cooking, or slap it on a open fire...The food tastes amazing out of a dutch oven

If you have a good cast iron one and love to have a nice fire in your backyard (sort of like a campfire), that dutch oven is great for prepping food in it, in the coals of the fire.

A Dutch oven is a heavy metal pot with a well fitted lid. You can make many things using one of 2 types of Dutch ovens. The first has 3 legs under it and a flat lid with a lip around the outside of the lid. This style of oven is referred to as a "Camp" oven and is used for cooking outdoors or in a large hearth over coals and placing coals on the lid to provide top heat. Heat under and on top of this oven makes a great vessle to bake all sorts of goodies in from breads to desserts and anything you can bke in your home oven.
The second oven is referred to as a flat oven. This oven has no legs and was made to be used inside your home oven and on your stove top. This type of oven has a flat bottom with no legs and a rounded"basting" lid food items most commonly cooked in this type of Dutch oven range from roasts to soups and stews. Although by providing some sort of legs under and a lip on the lid you can use these ovens the same way as a "camp "oven.
In either Dutch oven you can bake, stew, roast, sear, fry, boil, or cook using any method to prepare food. By using a cast iron Dutch oven inside your home oven you save money because the iron absorbs heat so well and retains the heat that the home oven needs to turn on less often to stay hot. I use my Dutch ovens all the time both on the stove top and in the home oven as well as cooking outdoors.
