What the difference between oysters and clams?!
Answers: is it the ways its cooked or something, b/c i always thought they were the same thing, like crawdads and crayfish.
Clams are more rubbery in texture, they're great fried and served with lemon wedges and malt vinegar or tartar sauce...and clams in pesto or marinara sauce are excellent over pasta. Oysters are smooth and soft when raw and I love them on the 1/2 shell with lemon wedges, Louisiana hot sauce, cocktail sauce, or Wasabi...Oysters are also great baked...Oysters Rockefeller...yum.
Clams and oysters are both bivalve molluscs. “Bivalve” means “two-shelled”. Clams have two shells that are mirror images of each other. They live buried in sediment and stick out their necks (actually, their siphons, which carry water in and out of the animal) to feed. Oysters, in contrast, have two shells that are slightly different: one is cupped, and the other is flat. Oysters live above the sediment and often attach to one another because each new generation cements itself to existing shells. Oysters have no need of siphons, and they filter water across their gill simply by opening their shell slightly.
The difference between a clam and oyster is by the shell. The clam shell is smooth and the oyster shell has a rough outer shell
crawdads and crayfish are the same thing, but different name. oysters and clams are two different, but they look the same
Different taste, texture, appearance. If you like seafood, you'll probably enjoy one or both
No, they are quite different in taste to me,,oysters have a stronger taste........you can deep fry both of them,,,you can make a chower out of both of them,,,don't forget he oyster crackers if you make oyster stew.....it is like comparing shrimp with crabs,,,,they have a smiliar taste and yet they don't....all however,,,do taste fishy.
....I don't think you can eat clams raw,,,,the way you can oysters...I live on the Gulf Coast,,,so I am more familiar with oysters.....we think fried is best....but we Southerners always think fried is best.....LOL
They have different shells and textures. Both CAN be eatem raw. I prefer them steamed. Oysters are more slimy where as clams are more chewy.
First, the similarities are:
1.- Both are members of the same family known as mollusk. The word mollusk is derived from the Latin word mollus, which means ‘soft’. All mollusks are soft-bodied animals.
2.- Both are bivalve, that is they have a shell consisting of two hinged valves.
The difference are:
1.- Oyster are characterized by rough and irregularly shaped shells that are closed by one adductor muscles. Clams are round, elongated or oval in shaped shells that are smooth and closed by two adductor muscles.
2.- In the oyster, the upper shell is larger and hollowed to contain the oyster's body; the lower shell is usually flat but may be concave. In the clam the shells are symmetrical.
3.- Adult oysters live attached to an object. Adult clams live buried in sand, hence, "digging for clams".
And what do you think is the main difference between mollusks and us? Our soft bodies protect our skeletons whereas their skeletons protect their soft bodies!
