Why are there sesame seeds on hamburger buns?!
Answers: they dont taste like anything and i cant really see what purpos they serve. so why does mcdonalds spend so much money putting the damn things on there?
This is actually a very interesting question, and so I've give it a star. There are three theories about this.
One school of thought holds that sesame seed buns are actually a by-product of sesame farming. It is well known that hamburger buns are the perfect growth medium for sesame seeds, but the seeds are so prolific and multiply so rapidly that sesame farmers were at one time forced to throw excess buns to the hogs. Then someone had the idea of selling them to hamburger joints, grocery stores, and ballparks.
But there is another competing theory. Economists have shown that the money that McDonalds spends "putting the damn things on there," as you put it, is actually wages paid to today's high-school generation, a large segment of the US population that is generally immune to education and incapable of pursuing meaningful, productive careers. Perfect candidates for employment at McDonalds.
Last, conspiracy theorists believe that the seeds are put there under the direction of the American Dental Association. Enough seed are eaten in any given day so that several hundred thousand get stuck between peoples' teeth. A small percentage of these people must see a dentist for relief from the impacted seeds, making the sesame seed the fourth most important source of dental problems in the US, and therefore an important source of income for dentists.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...
I guess so they could say "on a sesame seed bun"! Really I think just to make them look better , give them texture and all around a more appealing look to the eye.

flavor if its homemade if not its for crunchiness and looks
Perhaps they are healthy? And if you don't like sesam take one with poppy seed.

Why it simply looks better. We in Germany say, not only the tongue but also the eyes do taste.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Heinz
to make it look more appetizing i guess...
When there are just a few on the bun, you are right, they just make a difference. The bun isn't ant better. BUT, when you've got a totally covered (top of the hamburger) bun and it's toasted then you can enjoy its aroma and even the crunch.
PS - ALWAYS have a toothpick handy to poke the seeds out from between your teeth!
Sesame seeds do have flavor. I don't like buns without them. You might be able to ask for a plain bun on top. Tell them your allergic.
makes em look pretty and more $$$
I seriously doubt McDonalds puts the sesame seeds on the buns. They most likely buy them from a baker who puts them on.
I rather like sesame seeds, but I don't absolutely need them on my hamburger buns. And there are members of my family who don't like them.
I think they add something to the bun and they may even have a little food value.
I have bought hamburger buns with and without the seeds and I believe there is no difference in cost.
