One of my favorites and sooo easy. This is the way I make it. Brown lean hamburger meat and drain off the grease. I then mix the hamburger meat with a can of cream of mushroom soup (low sodium). I stir in a can or two of whatever veggies I have. We usually use a can of corn and a can of greenbeans. Mix all of that up and put it in a casserole dish. Pour tater tots on top and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at the temp the tater tot bag says...for the length of time the tater tot bag says. That will get everything nice and warm and bubbly and make the tots crispy. MMMMM....
go to allrecipes.com They have a recipe there and all there recipes are so good and easy to follow. I've only seen the recipe once and it involved the tots, ground beef, cheese, and a can of rotel tomatoes stirred in with the beef.
Oh, not sure what you mean but it conjures up bad memories.
When I was a kid my Mom would put raw hamburger in a dish, on top of that she would put a can of drained mixed veggies and on top of that some frozen tater tots, to top that off she put a can of cream of mushroom soup. She baked it in the oven until it was done. I never did like that casserole.

In a large skillet over high heat, brown the ground beef and drain fat. Stir in condensed cream of mushroom soup, skim milk, garlic salt and green beans. Pour the mixture into a medium-sized casserole dish and layer with the tater tots.
Bake in preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until tater tots are browned and crispy.
I just made this last week, a favorite winter comfort dish at our house. You've got a bunch of recipes already here so I'll just add my two cents. I use ground turkey a lot, since there is so much other stuff in there I save a little fat. The person who gave me the recipe used one can of cream of mushroom and one can of cream of chicken. I use the frozen mixed vegetable medley without lima beans. Enjoy
Not sure which recipe you mean but we love this one. It freezes very well. I add a pie crust to the bottom of ours and bake it before filling it (we just like it that way, it's not necessary).
Tater Tot Chicken Pie
1 (2 lb) bag frozen tater tots
1/2 cup chopped onions
2 small garlic cloves, pressed
1 tablespoon butter or olive oil
2 cups diced cooked chicken
1/4 cup milk
1 (10 ounce) package frozen mixed vegetables
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of chicken soup
dried thyme
black pepper
1.Preheat oven to 375°.
2.In large skillet, cook onion and pressed garlic in butter or olive oil over medium high heat until onion is tender.
3.Add cooked chicken, frozen veggies, undiluted soup, milk, thyme and pepper.
4.Stir ingredients together and cook over medium heat until hot and bubbly. Stirring occasionally.
5.Cover and cook an additional 5 minutes; stirring frequently.
6.Spoon chicken mixture into ungreased 2-quart casserole dish.
7.Arrange frozen tater tots on top.
8.Bake 40 minutes or until bubbly and tater tots are slightly browned.
9.Note: Also, I sometimes add an extra can of soup and an extra 1/4 cup of milk for a thinner consistency. This would be a personal preference. Also, I add approximately 1/2 tsp of dried thyme and 1/2 tsp of black pepper for one casserole - adaptable to your taste.
