Are you supposed to brown a roast before throwing it in a crock pot?!

Question: If you want to add a lot more flavor to the dish, and help keep the meat moist and tender, yes...it's a very good idea to brown it first.

I would and I do.........helps keep the meat moist and tender

Yes it helps seal in the juices and retains the flavor

Yes, it helps seal in the juices!

You don't have to - it will turn out fine with out browning. But if you have the time and the inclination - browning can add a depth of flavor that is very nice.

I've tried it both ways and yeah, browning helps but it won't be the end of the world if you don't.

You can, however I rarely do, mostly because I use the crock pot to save on time and dirty dishes. When I make pot roast, I just toss it in first thing in the morning and let it cook all day with the onion, garlic, and celery. At about 3:00 I put in the carrots and peeled potatoes and once those are cooked the meat is usually falling apart and my dad is making his kitty numnum noises so its good enough. One pot goodness, almost no mess, and feeds about 5 (or 2 and a REALLY hungry dad)

i never do..i slow cook it,it comes out so tender, you can cut it with a plastic knife, (I work in the am) put it on low for five hrs..get up turn it off..go to work..come home..reheat...good to go

No

It also makes it look better. Looks more roasted and not just boiled.

It will provide more full flavor.
