Are there any other uses for buttermilk?!

Question: My husband got me a 1liter jug of buttermilk. I used about a cup of that to bake cookies. I don't want it to go to waste. What other uses do I have for buttermilk? Mashed potatoes sounds nice, anything else?

Buttermilk fried chicken! (served with buttermilk biscuits and gravy, of course!)

1 (3 pound) fryer, cut into pieces
2 cups buttermilk
6 cloves garlic, smashed
1 large onion, sliced
1 cup chopped mixed fresh herbs (parsley, tarragon, thyme)
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon onion salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper
3 cups solid vegetable shortening

Soak chicken in buttermilk with garlic, onions, herbs, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Refrigerate overnight or at least 8 hours. Drain in colander, leaving some herbs on chicken. In a large paper grocery bag, mix flour with seasonings. Meanwhile, heat 3 cups shortening in cast iron pan until 350 degrees. Place chicken pieces in bag with flour and shake, let sit 1 minute, then shake again. Add chicken to hot pan and fry on 1 side for 20 minutes, then turn to finish.

You can make your own ranch dressing using mayo, buttermilk, some lemon juice, fresh herbs like dill, chives and parsley! If you like ranch dressing you willl never want the store bought stuff again. I also created a dipping sauce for my Mexican egg rolls but it is good for many things. I used the ingredients above along with a cantainer of sour cream and it is good as well add a little cayenne too.

Oh don't forget to add salt and white pepper to the ranch and the sour cream dip.

Hidden valley ranch dressing, get one of those envelopes at the store and follow the directions.

I make pancakes, waffles, muffins, biscuits and we drink it as well. With the exception of the milk we save to drink everything else freezes well.

It can be used either as a wet dredge or as a marinade base when preparing food for deep frying. When it is used as a dredge, it can be seasoned with spices and/or herbs. You simply dip the food in it, shake off the excess, and coat with flour or other breading solids. When used as a marinade base, it lends its own flavor and moisture to the food, as well as the flavors of any herbs, spices, or other ingredients added to it. Many deep fried foods, especially fried chicken, have a marinade consisting of chicken in buttermilk and spices.

If you are into baking, buttermilk donuts are extremely tasty. I had one last Sunday.
