How do you make a good home chili?!
Answers: Carroll Shelby has a chili seasoning mix that is very good, by the time you purchase all of the spices it will be a pretty expensive endeavor. It has different components so you can make it mild or spicy, thick or runny. This might not be made from scratch, but you will be making it at home.

Seriously, go online to America's Test Kitchen & pull a recipe from there. They test things out repeatedly before they'll post anything and they're usually idiot-proof.

This is a recipe I developed:
Black Bean Chili
1 lb. skinless spicy Italian sausage
1 lb. ground beef
1 tbs. olive oil
1 large onion, diced
4 large cloves of garlic, chopped
1 small can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
2 cans of black beans or 1 lb. of dried black beans which
have been picked over & soaked to soften and cooked
1 lg. can of crushed tomatoes
2 tbs. of chili powder
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. oregano
1/4 to 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa
1 lg can of Guiness Stout
In a frying pan, cook the sausage and ground beef till done,
crumbling it while cooking. In your chili pot, heat the olive oil and saute onion & garlic with the cumin, chili powder, & oregano until softened. Add the canned diced tomatoes, the beans, and the cooked meats with the fat drained off.
Take the chipotles out of the adobo sauce and chop them
up. Add to the chili pot with the reserved adobo sauce. Add the cocoa to the chili pot by sifting it through a strainer while stirring the chili. Add the Guinness, cover, & cook over low heat for a couple of hours.
I find this recipe comes into its own on the second day. the flavor combination from the Stout, cocoa, & smokiness from the adobo is pretty amazing.
I make mine in the crock pot and let it simmer all day
mix in crock pot in this order to make it easier
1 can tomato paste
1 can tomato juice (V-8 or whatever)
1 lg can diced tomato
1lb cooked ground beef or ground chicken or turkey
1 diced green pepper
1 diced onion
4-5 stalks chopped celery
1 can rinsed kidney beans
chili power
set on low for 5-8 hours, or you can make it in a pan and let it simmer for awhile
