Anyone ever cooked frozen black eyed peas and neck bones in a crock pot? If so, how long should ....?!
Answers: How long should I keep them in there and what setting?
Put all your seasonings onion whatever you want along with the neck bones and peas. Water to cover and cook for at least 5 hours on med if you are at home if your doing it over night , on low will be done by time you get up
get some chicken stock and simmer the neck for an hour add black eyed peas and other of your taste cook till hot
the peas if cooked too long will be mushy. you don't need a crock pot for frozen peas
dry peas- crock pot low 5 hours
fresh peas - simmer on stove two hours
I soak mine overnight and season the neckbones also, then the next day roast the bones, as it is roasting I start the crockpot, I drain the peas, and add the seasoning and boiling water from the kettle, only hold off on the salt or they will go tough, save that for the end, I also add a pieces of either salt pork or diced smoked jowl.
Bring it to the boil on high, add the neckbones let them go for 1 hour on high until it reboils, then lower it to low for 5-6 hours or all day while your out at work, the longer it cooked the better it is.
For seasonings I use paprika, bay leaves, dried thyme, fresh garlic, black pepper and as I said leave the salt until the beans are cooked, a bit of tomato paste or tomato sauce is a good way to round out the stew.
