All i do is cut it up, put it in a large skillet add some bacon and water cover it and let it cook, put it on medium low heat

There are many ways to cook cabbage. If you are growing it you really need to do a websearch. There are recipes for everything from boiled cabbage to a coleslaw that you can freeze, thaw and then serve.

Here's how I do it most of hte time.

Cut a head of cabbage in half lengthwise.
Cut the halves into thirds (you'll have six sections)
Fry six slices of bacon in a large skillet until crisp. Set the bacon aside. Cool and crumble it.
Leaving the bacon fat in the skillet. Add 1/2 cup water and the cabbage sections. Salt and pepper to taste.
Simmer until desired tenderness is reached.
Serve with bacon crumbles.

put it in a skillet with some water and a ham hock and just let it simmer until tender

I also like to cook cabbage with a fatty meat. My husband and I like to layer cabbage with our favorite sausage and cook on 350F in the oven. It tastes GREAT!

Otherwise, we often make stir fry with cabbage, carrots, onions, etc. The trick to good stir fry is to skip the soy sauce and buy some authentic "Oyster Sauce" and "Fish Sauce". The flavors are SO much better. Just add a few Tbsp of Oyster sauce, 1 tsp fish sauce, 2 tsp lime juice and 2 tsp of sugar over your meat when you are cooking it. After the meat is cooked, add a bit of water (1/3 cup or so) and your vegetables, stir around to coat vegetables and put the lid on to steam them done.

This is my kids favorite way to have cabbage. Otherwise, you could go ultra low fat by shredding the cabbage with other vegetables (like cole slaw) and tossing with a sugar and red wine vinegar solution. Let it sit and you get a fun Norwegian salad.

Have fun and good luck.

There is no great recipe here, Cut up your cabbage or quarter it or cut in wedges add to the pot and cover with cold water and add salt. Put heat on high and cook 20-30 minutes. Serve with butter or oil. You may find this a little bland you live in the south.

However, I personally recommend you season the same way you cook collard greens and perhaps add a few spices or hot sauce to the water & some cracked black pepper.

As far as recipes go, there must be hundreds. Favourite European food, everything from sauerkraut, to cabbage rolls, cabbage roll casseroles, both rolls & casseroles have ground meat and rice, soups from cabbage & keilbasa sausage to borcht; then there is mustard glazed & sweet & sour.
Happy New Year!

Shred, Head, Butter and Bread Recipe courtesy Alton Brown
Show: Good Eats
Episode: Head Games

1/2 stick unsalted butter
1/2 cup pulverized, seasoned croutons
2 pinches dry mustard
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 small head cabbage, shredded
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar

Fill your largest pot 3/4 full with water and bring to a boil on high heat.
Melt the butter and croutons in a skillet. Add the mustard and caraway seeds and stir over medium heat until the butter browns and smells nutty. Remove the skillet from the heat, but leave dressing in the pan.

Add the salt and sugar to the boiling water and cook until dissolved. Place the cabbage in the boiling water and cook for 2 minutes exactly.

Drain the cabbage in the bowl of the salad spinner or colander. Spin the cabbage to remove any excess water. Add the cabbage to the butter-crumb dressing and toss to coat thoroughly.

I like to cut my cabbage in half, remove the core, then shred one half. I then saute onions and bacon cut into small pieces until the onions are translucent. I drain off all but 1-2 T of the bacon grease, add the cabbage and stir and cook until the cabbage wilts and is just past tender-crisp. Season with black pepper and enjoy.

My other fav is just to cut in half, remove core, cut into quarters, boil, drain, and add butter and black pepper.
