What fruits are good in the wintertime?!

Question: I am making a commitment to myself to eat healthier in 2008. I want to go to the store to buy fresh produce, but it seems to me that some fruits and vegetables are very out of season right now. What are my best bets for produce that won't be yucky and flavorless this time of year in the midwest?

Most citrus fruits....clementines in particular....are great. I shop at the farmers market and this year I've put some fruits like apples and pears in cold storage. They're great now. Unfortunately fresh fruits and veggies aren't going to be top-tasting because they aren't really fresh. You do need to pay attention to the growing season of each product as this will tell you when they're at peak. Just because you can buy tomatoes all year doesn't mean they're flavorful.

In the winter, the best thing to get is clementines. They are delicious! And bananas are good all year. I wouldn't recommend apples this time of year.

Fresh fruit is grown somewhere in the world at all times. Seasonal eating habits are only necessary to take advantage of the local produce in the summer. Right now, I can find great citrus (clementines, oranges), apples, pears, mango, grapes, melon (not watermelon), bananas.

Contrary to the other posters, fruits and vegetables of today are not like the hothouse tomatoes of the 70's. Years ago, tomatoes in the winter were grown in hot houses. Today they are shipped from another country where they ARE IN SEASON. The same goes for most fruits and vegetables. Remember, the southern hemisphere has a climate that runs opposite ours and NOW is their growing season.

Oranges and apples will be good now.Bananas are always good for you....
