Homemade bread going bad early?!

Question: I made my first loaf of bread and it came out good enough to eat. I was surprised, but it got moldy in about a week. Is this normal for homemade bread and how can I keep it longer? It may be a sin, but can I "add" some preservatives? Thanks again to all who answered my last question, very helpful. (got a fresh loaf proofing right now:)

There is no preservative you would WANT to use in homemade bread....it would then equate something different. I keep mine in the fridge if it goes too long with out being eaten. Then into the popup toaster or broiler or in a skillet with butter to heat or toast. We usually eat it all up though, thus this big hiney. Think of other ways to eat it besides just bread or toast. Love to make hot dog or hambgr buns. For several years when my kids were young and the preservative scare was rampant, I made all our bread products. You can make wonderful French toast and bread pudding too. If basic dough recipe, make your own pizza crusts or foccacia bread. Different breads can be made from basic recipe by making additions or changing the shape.

maybe you didn't cover it right

This is normal. Like you said its because there are no preservatives.

wrap it up tight & freeze it... when u want to use it cut off wat u need & throw it in the oven to take the chill off... or toast it. it will stay fresher longer... about 2 months

Home made bread can go moldy in as little as three days Don't ruin fresh bread with preservatives. slice it and freeze it and use the slices as needed. Do not refrigerate bread as this just dries it out. Keep up the good work. Home made is much healthier.
