I'm broke...whats a cheap meal that I can make myself?!


Question: A big bag of rice lasts a long time. You can thrown in a scrambled egg and some soy sauce and you've got poor man's fried rice! I lived off that stuff in college!

Chilimac is good for the poor -- add a can of chili to Kraft Mac & Cheese, and voila, Chilimac. It's pretty good. When I was a super poor student I ate a lot of PB&J and tunafish sandwiches.

Grilled Venison, roast goose, grilled salmon.

Assuming you have the skills to harvest wild game yourself - great meals are VERY inexpensive.

Otherwise there is always Ramen Noodles.

uhh if your broke just heat up a tv tray meal in the microwave,or just make a simple hotdog,sandwich [use cheese if u want and put it in the toaster],bagle [sp?],tortilla [with anything u ? inside],chicken nuggets,steamed veggies,cut up apples,oranges,peaches,pairs ohh this list can go on and on well...I think u get the point! hope this helps ?=]

When I was in college I ate a lot of top ramen with egg in it (drain the water almost all out then put the egg in and cook till not so slimy on lower heat) and whatever chopped up veggies I could find. A little celery and carrot went a long way!

Tuna fish with some celery or pickle makes me feel like I'm not broke.

Pasta with sauteed onion and eggs in it is surprisingly good and filling -protein and carbs. I add whatever meat I can find and it is quite good. If I have cheese I put that in as well.

Scrambled eggs and toast are great in a pinch too because you can put anything you want in your eggs - any meat, cheese, veggie, spice. Explore. Same with pasta though which is cheaper but not as protein filled.

Get a bag of penne pasta from the store. They are usually pretty inexpensive. Then find a type of jarred tomato sauce you like and a jarred pesto sauce. Cook the penne and in a separate sauce pan, heat the tomato sauce. Add in the pesto sauce to taste. (I like to make my tomato/pesto about 50/50 but you can change that depending on how much you like pesto.) Pour the combined sauce over the pasta. The flavor is really interesting (very tasty) and the whole thing can last two or three meals. Should cost you less than $7.

If you want, you can also add things like chicken or cheese, depending on how much you want to spend.

go home to your mom and bum off of her...! just kdding. when i'm "in the red," i tend to go to the dollar tree and browse their food isles. i know it still involves buying something, but it would be cheaper than HEB or some other supermarket. : /

i also like cream-of-wheat (the off-brand of everything is much cheaper) with some milk to make it creamier. it fills you up like nothing else! add some breakfast sausage, and you've got your protien to keep you going for a while!

again, off-brand is so much cheaper and tastes EXACTLY the same!!!!

Rice or soybeans in bulk are cheap. Ramen is convenient, but not that filling, so (assuming you're a guy) you need to eat about 3 of them for a meal, maybe more in cold weather.

Eggs are just about the best deal in protein, aside from vegetables like beans. A can of tuna (the low-end kind) is more expensive, but still much cheaper than any meat.

If you like bread occasionally, look for the expired rack at the supermarket, or see if there is a bakery outlet near you.

My mother used to sate some garlic and diced onions in a little olive oil,then add canned baked beans,biol some spaghetti,toss and serve.It may sound gross,but it is sooo good.Also elbows and tuna,with a little mayo is yummo too.

When I was in college, I would stir fry vegetables with soy sauce and sesame oil (usually saved form chinese takeout). Set cooked veggies aside, boil ramen noodles, (make sure to add flavor packet so the noodles have flavor.) drain water and throw noodles in the wok/pan. I would add a little peanut oil to crisp up the noodles. Put noodles on plate, and pour veggies over them. I impressed many roommates with this dish, and it cost about $7 if you buy a bag of stir fry vegetables (much quicker) and a small thing of peanut oil. Good luck!

- turn the oven on at 475
- cut the potatoes semi-thin
- layer potatoes in pan or casserole
- melt butter and pour over potatoes
- cook in oven for 15-20

pasta can be pretty cheap (some store brands are $1 a pound)

If you need protein just add cheese

Steak Gorgonzola, grilled veggies and a nice wine.
