I want to make a recipe but its in american measures- so what would one cup be equal to and a stick of butter?!

In America...

4 sticks is 2 cups ..1 stick is 1/2 cup.

American measuring cups are 250ml.

Shortening is solid fat that can be scooped, can be lard, but usually vegetable based...like Crisco brand..could even be butter or margarine, but that makes more of a butter flavor that you might not want in the recipe...

Confectioner's sugar is powdered sugar. I think you can make it by putting granulated sugar in a blender on high? Or buy it..

Broiling is putting something (usually meat) on the top shelf of the oven on the "broiling" setting which only turns the top burner of the oven on high.

Confectioners sugar in English is icing sugar!!

Confectioners sugar is what we in uk call granulated sugar.
A stick of butter is approximately 4 ounces or 100g
a cup of dry ingredients like flour is again about 4 ounces or 100g,
Shortening is often lard, though I could be corrected on this though some refer to baking powder as shortening!! confusing.
Broiling is like a shallow frying process or dry pan process as oposed to griddle cooking

i dont alot of baking, a stick of butter equals to 1/2 cup. on the wrappers of butter it usually has all the measurements of whatever amount of butter you need and where to cut. shortening is like crisco brand. its like butter but it never needs to be refrigerated. you find it in the baking isle next to cooking oils ect. Confectioners sugar is the same thing as powder sugar. It's a white sugar but its powder form unlike regular sugar. You use it in icings, frostings and other sweet goods. Broiling is kinda like grilling but it's inside the oven instead of outside. there should be a button on your stove that says broil. it will make your food crispy and toasty like and only takes a few minutes usually. I don't know where you are located so I don't know if they sell american measuring cups but I would think so. If not you can always buy them online at any cooking/baking supply store .. here is a example

Most all the answers you've received are correct; however, please note confectioners (or powdered) sugar is known as icing sugar in the UK it is NOT granulated sugar.

As to measuring cups and spoons; both of these are easily available at ASDA or other large grocery stores in the UK. I strongly advise buying them if you intend to make other American recipes. Following the recipe as written using both the cups and spoons will yield a proportionally correct set of measurements for the recipe you are following.
