this is an old recipe in the betty crocker cookbooks. I love it. Hope you do too!

~Silver White Cake~
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 2/3 cup sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cup milk
2/3 cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
5 egg whites

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour a 9X13 pan, or two 8 or 9 inch round pans. Beat all ingredients except egg whites till smooth and well blended, about 2 minutes. Beat in the egg whites 2 minutes. Pour into pans. Bake 9X13 40-45 minutes, 9 inch round pans 30-35 minutes, and 8 inch round pans 23-28 minutes, or till wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Frost with desired frosting.

Makes great cupcakes too! Just bake them 20-25 minutes.

Here, this is my grandma's recipe. I included the frosting recipe she always makes for it. I've made it several times and it is excellent!

1/2 tsp. lemon flavoring
3 c. sifted cake flour
1-1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt

I have always had good luck with stuff from cooks.com

I cannot help you with making a cake from scratch. However, a VERY GOOD cake recipe that I recently discovered (and have tried it in various flavors of cake) is to buy one box of cake mix (any kind) and mix with one can of diet coke. Mix batter, pour into a greased pan and bake according to box directions. It is so moist. So much better for you too! Good luck.

Yellow sponge cake

12 egg yolks
1/2 cup water
1 3/4 cups granulated sugar, divided
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 to 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Beat egg yolks and water with electric beater until lemon colored.
Add 1/2 cup sugar and continue beating until light yellow.
Sift together the remaining sugar, flour, salt and baking powder.
Fold dry ingredients and vanilla extract into egg yolk mixture.
Bake in a greased and floured tube pan at 375 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until done.
Remove from pan when cool
