Need help with "my little Pony" cake?!

Question: I am custom making a "My little Pony" cake for my daughters birthday but am stuck on what to use for making the mane and tail which will not be cake. I have considered fruity licorice rope or molding it our of colored fondant. Does anyone else have any other creative suggestions? I prefer it to be edible or at least food safe.
The cake is not from a character cake mold like Wilton. Its actually going to carved into the shape of the ponys body.

I used shoestring licorice on a cake once--must be something you have to do to it first to help it keep it's shape. They tend to straighten back out pretty quick.. I would build the mane with cake first, then ice it , then pipe on (in strands) a light blue (for example) with just a plain, round tube--not too small. then I'd pipe a lighter blue or white strands on top of those-spaced so you can see the blue strands. I'm pretty sure you can buy pre-made sugar flowers-- put 3 or 5 in the mane at strategic places (any boo boo's you wanna hide) or pile them up--just have fun with it! =)
If you don't have a piping bag,you can re-inforce the corner of a freezer zip lock bag with a thick tape then snip a teeny bit off the corner with scissors.

A tip that you make grass with works perfect.
It is flat on the end with a few holes in.Put in you pastry bag a
make long strands with it like hair.

maybe you can heat some really thick dark syrup and swish it back and forth on a frozen greased cookie sheet in the shape you desire. place in freezer and when the syrup has hardened, put on cake

maybe Cotton candy

maybe some coconut and you can add food coloring.

Personally, I think that it would be depending on how you icing the cake. If you pipe it I personally think the licorice will look better but if you are going to smooth it out I would use the fondant. Personally, I would pipe it and then use the licorice, I have done pipe cakes and fondant cakes and it seems that kids like the pipe look and the way it tastes better than the fondant! I just made a piped baby duckling, my 15 month old son sat there and stared at it for a long time. Have Fun!

I'm drawing a blank on the name of candy, but they carry it at Wal-Mart and they are long strings of sour candy...they come in bright colors and are sprinkled in sugar, so they are sparkly looking. I think for a My Little Pony cake, they would be really cute and easy to use. Using fondant and icing, I would be worried about it breaking, but a flexible candy would be easy and add some cool texture and the kids would love it. Grr, I wish I wasn't drawing a blank on the name of it, but its usually in the candy aisle where they have the stuff in "movie" sized boxes.
