The name "sloppy" comes from the fact that eating it as if it were a normal sandwich often results in the meat and sauce spilling out. It may also be served "open face", with the bun halves or slices of bread next to each other and the meat on top of each.[2] A Sloppy Joe served with no bun at all is known as a saucy beefeater
The origins of this dish are unknown, but recipes for the dish date back at least to the 1940s. It dates in print to 1935. There is probably no Joe after whom it is named--but its rather messy appearance and tendency to drip off plate or roll makes "sloppy" an adequate description, and "Joe" is an American name of proletarian character and unassailable genuineness. There are many individual and regional variations on the dish.[3]

The term Sloppy Joe is also used in Australia (and other countries) to describe a loose fitting pullover, often made from fleecy lined cotton. Reference Macquarie Dictonary, second edition, The Macquarie Library Pty, Ltd, 1995, page 1648.

In the United States a Sloppy Joe is a dish of ground beef, onions; flavored with ketchup and other seasonings and served on a hamburger bun.[1] Commercially made sauces such as Manwich are also available. Textured vegetable protein may be used as a vegetarian substitute for the meat. Sloppy Joes are simpler variant of barbecue sandwich which uses shredded beef or pork and barbecue sauce. A Sloppy Joe made from minced turkey is also known as a Sloppy Tom. Variants can be made with any ground meat. For example, the 1 pound Jimmy Dean smoked sausage packages have recipies printed on them, including how to make a "Smokey Joe". [1]

Cause Sloppy Ho was too unappetizing. :P

Little Josephine's mother didn't know what to make for dinner and there wasn't much in the house so she threw some cooked ground beef, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, you name it into the pan to cook. She served the concoction on slices of bread. When it was time to eat, Josephine immediately picked up the piece of bread and proceeded to eat with her hands. Her mother said to her, "Quit being so sloppy, Josephine! Eat like a lady!" Josephine liked the meat so much she completely ignored what her mother said and wolfed it down. The meal became a regular in the house and a favorite amongst everyone who tried it. Whenever someone asked the mother what she called the meal "Sloppy Joes" because she was too ashamed to admit that her daughter ate like a little disgusting boy.

The End.
