I refrigerated homemade buttercream frosting overnight...?!

Question: Now it's too solid for spreading. Oops! How can I get it soft again without ruining it? Do I have to wait for it to soften up at room temp? Is there a faster way?
Also, once it's soft and on the cupcakes, should I refrigerate them or can I leave them at room temp. covered? How long will they keep?
Thanks!

just let it set out for about 10min then try to use it then. i would refrigerate them. if you keep them covered and in the fridge they should last over a week. mine did.

Add a few drops cream is best...milk can do but it has more liquid. Let sit for 10 minutes or so to get to room temp and then add cream by drops. When spreadable, ice cakes. Don't have to refrigerate unless they aren't used in couple days or it is very warm in your house.

When things get hard just wait for them to get soft again

Let it sit out for a few minutes and beat again with an electric mixer, adding a bit more cream if needed for spreadable consistency.

microwave for 1 second at a time until soft, I do it this way

To begin with, leave it out for a bit. Depending on the specific mixture, that might soften it enough for it to be spread.

If that fails, despite popular belief you *can* microwave frosting. However, you need to be very careful, ensuring that it never becomes hot.

You can leave the cupcakes at room temperature, as long as they're covered in a tightly sealed container. In my experience, they'll taste good for about 3-5 days.

If refrigerated, probably 5-7.

you could try beatin the frosting to allow some air into it helping to melt quicker.
cupcakes are fine if you store in an airproof container in a dark, cool place but not the refridgerator as the cake will go hard and stale like. not sure how long the cupcakes will last though as they only last a couple of days at our house lol
