Making iced sugar cookies - need advice on decorating...?!
I want to do frosted sugar cookies similar to this for V-day:http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im... I know it's early, but I want to make a trial batch soon. I had this dilemna with my Christmas cookies: how do you do the writing and the detailing with frosting? I tried the gels in the tubes, but those are iffy. The yellow one I had was awfully runny. I also tried using toothpicks, but they tend to cut into the cookie, making crumblies. I used plastic toothpicks when I was helping my grandma decorate her's, and that was a little better. Is there an easier way? The detailing on those looks so perfect! Will those tube things that they use for decorating cakes work - do they have them in small enough sizes for cookies?
Also, I really like the cookies in the link below. How can you make chocolate frosting in that consistency? I've heard of making your own frosting with confectioner's sugar and cocoa, but do you add water to it or milk?

Those cookies use Royal Icing, and yes, you use a cake decorating "tip" for doing the cookies also. They have the small round tips at cake decorating stores and also some craft stores like Michael's.
You can get a recipe for Royal Icing at http://www.wilton.com
Enjoy!
I meant to make a comment about the decorating frosting and gels that you can buy - the usually don't harden up, so it's very hard to decorate cookies that have to be stacked at all. Butter cream will harden to a certain extent, just not as well as Royal Icing.
It's royal icing, the icing gets hard so you put down different colors, they melt together and harden, it tastes really good! There going to be delicious!

I know some people who have used similar betty crocker products like this one and it turned out great. Good Luck!
Not sure about the decorating part of your question, but my can of cocoa has the frosting recipe on the can. Use butter, vanilla, cocoa, confectioner's sugar and milk.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons cream
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
In a saucepan, over medium heat, heat cream and butter until butter is melted. Stir in the vanilla and confectioners' sugar. Remove from heat, and beat with an electric mixer until thick and smooth.
to make the chocolate ad 1/3 cup of cocoa powder to the mix.
1 cup of powder sugar
1 tsp of lemon
4 tbsp of water (add one tbsp at a time)
1 drop of food coloring of your choice.
To control the thickness of the icing I recommend that you add the water a tbsp at a time, this way if you think it's too runny add a little more powder sugar, or too think add a dash of water. When you have it in the perfect consistancy you want put it in a disposable piping bag and make a small nip at to pipe.
If you want to make chocolate frosting. Melt 1 cup of chocolate in a double boiler. add powder sugar until you have the consistancy that you want.
Betty Crocker makes no mess tubes of decorating gel. The easy bake oven series for kids has decorating tubes with small sizes as far as frosting you can beat a cotainer of ready made frosting and add a 1/2 teaspoon of milk.
