What is saunf in tamil used in cooking?!

Question: Its an ingredient used in cooking

Answers: Its an ingredient used in cooking

Well, saunf (and we have been trying to figure the spelling...so thanks!) is fennel in English. I am wife of Pakistani and i cook daily several meals...very traditional wife really. Anyways, we use saunf for several things...
1) he loves it with a candy mix...it is little yellow, pink & white fennel coated candies mixed with fennel too. It is a breathe freshener as well as helps break up gas that may form after a meal. It can also be mixed with coconut grounds instead of candy.
2) in tea. We (his mom gave me this recipe) use it mixed in with green tea and mint for upset stomachs. It really settles a belly ache fast.
3) cooking. I know it is used with cauliflower (gobi in hindi/urdu i think) and with other foods that may cause gas pains. Just add a bit in to cut gas pains before they start. It can change the flavor to a more licorice taste so if you dont like that in the food, then eat after the meal in the candy/"saunf" mix form instead.
Hope this helps you some! I wish i could tell you more from Tamil point but i mainly know Pakistani/North Indian/Bangladeshi recipes and a few from Telegu area...oh and my friends that spoke Telegu...she added it into a lot of things including daal to cut gas pains for her hubby....and her food was lovely.

Good Luck!

It is also called perum cheeragam in Tamil. In appearance, it is similar to cheeragam (cumin seeds), but is slightly larger. In flavor, it is very different from cumin seeds. It is used to make non-vegetarian and egg dishes. Some recipes require you to roast it and grind it before adding it to the dish. Here is a recipe for pepper chicken that calls for this ingredient. Saunf is called fennel seeds in this recipe. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/databa...
