You won't lose weight by diet alone, but changing your eating habits is a good place to start.
Make sure you get plenty of water. Don't starve yourself. You'll actually gain more non-healthy weight by not eating frequently.
Eat fresh fruits, veggies, whole grain breads and other carbohydrates, protein, dairy products, lean meats, some unsaturated fats, and occasionally indulge in a "non-healthy" treat. Most meat servings should be 2/3 the size of your fist for a handy comparison (I sure don't want to carry a scale with me to weigh out my food!). Skip heavy sauces entirely; opt for clarified pan juices or a bit of a non-salt based seasoning, like Mrs. Dash. You should have 24 ounces a day of milk to maintain healthy bone mass. Opt for brown or wild rice instead of plain white; baked sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon instead of white with butter and sour cream. Battered and deep fried foods have far more calories than grilled, broiled or steamed. The high fiber and/or water content veggies, like celery, take more calories to consume and process than they contain.
If you are still growing, make sure you're getting ALL your food groups, too.
Walking at above your usual pace for 30 minutes cancels out the calories consumed in most treats.
Instead of putting dressings on your salad, have them on the side. You'll be amazed at how much less you use if you're dipping the pieces in. Or use a vinagrette with or without pureed fruit added.
If you need/want specific recipes or nutrition information on food items,(some labels aren't clear on the breakdown of saturated versus unsaturated fats) contact your local USDA extension service or county health department. It's a no cost resource and most of what is available at ours is in pamphlet form and you can take it with you. Some also offer classes at no charge.
Staying active and eating reasonably is a great choice for life. Congratulations.
