What's the best way to minimize (stop) 'crying' when chopping onion?!

Question: I turn the cutting board away, but that doesn't really help. Suggestions?

stop chopping onion... kidding.... really ... put a little chop of onion ontop of your head.... i have seen working to some one... not to me tough

cutting next to cold running water seems to help me.

I saw on a TV program the other day to suck a wooden cooking spoon. Never tried it though so don't know it works!

After you slice the onion in half, lay the onion down with the inside of the onion facing out. Then just walk away for a few minutes. Come back and slice away.

Put the onions in the freezer for about 1/2 hour before cutting them up. (this method works for me)

Here is a site with some other suggestions though.

Soak your onion in ice water for a bit before you cut it up!

put a tea spoon in your mouth

wear goggles

Try this one burn a scented candle at the sme time your cutting the onion. Or 2 soak them for 20 mins in an ice bath before cutting them up. Both have worked for me the best

cut the onion under running water in the sink. The water rinses and actually pulls much of the scent down the drain.
It's how my wife does it. She's a smarty pants!

a good way is to put a spoon in your mouth. it really does work

I chew gum while cutting onions, it seems to help.

Lighting a small votive candle near my chopping board. I thought it was the most bizarre thing I've ever heard, but it actually works

I heard you are supposed to freeze the onion for a few minutes before cutting it. Also you can wear swimming goggles to prevent the onion from irritating your eyes.

chop quicker...really

Wear goggles

chewing gum helps..i have no idea why but i was cutting onions at my sisters wedding and got teary eyed so instead of lookig stupid crying during the reception her friend gave me gum to chew until i was done

Peel the onions, chop in half and wash them in cold water. If you're planning on using a whole onion and don't wish to chop them, leave the onions in cold water for a few minutes.

Bite a pencil or something made out of wood while you are chopping the onion. Also, hold the onion under cold water before you cut it. Works everytime!

You'll never cry again if you use Vidalia onions. They're just as good as a yellow onion, not as strong as a red onion but you will not "cry" when chopping them-and they have a really good flavor as well.

soak the peeled onion in cold water for a bit before you chop. i've heard wearing goggles helps too

Cut the onion in half or in quarters. Place the onion halves or quarters in water before chopping it. This should minimize the fumes released while chopping inions.

Wear glasses to shield your eyes from the flying juices.

Cold water does the trick. I worked a McD's and had to chop endless onions. Not one tear was shed when I did it under running water.

Whistle while you cut them. Don't know why, but it works.

When you cut the onion in half, wash it thouroughly under running cold water until it's not slimy any more. Do this to both halves. (And every other onion you chop). It takes out some of the acidic juice. It works for me every time.

the reason onions make you cry is
1.)it is only the big white onions that make you cry
2.)when you break the shell a gas is let out and it irritates your eyes.

so, either stop using that kind of onion
or protect your eyes with goggles or something or other

I refrigerate my onions and find that it helps considerably. Or toss them in the freezer for about 20 minutes and chop with a mouthful of Cheerios. :)

Put the onion in the freezer for 15-20 mins prior to chopping it.

Cutting an onion under running water can help. In a worst case scenario, wearing something like goggles can help, but you'd still be inhaling the onion fumes.

If you are chopping onions into small pieces, use an enclosed chopper with blades.

Aside from using a cutting board and knife, use one of those food slicers that will do it quickly. Put the onion on it and you can slice the entire thing at once or in just a couple of passes.

Try Google for an answer as there are a lot of remedies and suggesions out there on just this subject.
