How to make instant mashed potatoes taste like real potatoes?!

Question: I've tried to follow the package directions, but they just don't taste anything like a potato.

Answers: I've tried to follow the package directions, but they just don't taste anything like a potato.

O.K. First, Instant Mashed Potaoes will never taste like real potatoes..because they are NOT! That being said...if the instructions call for water..use milk..if the instructions call for milk use cream... or a mixture of both milk and cream...lots of butter for both, salt and pepper, bring water to a rapid boil and slightly undercook according to the time given for cooking. Try and find a brand of instant potatoes that uses dehydrated real potatoes...OR.. try real potaoes..the time difference for cooking is not much longer..the only time is in the peeling! Not to mention the money saved in using the real thing. Good luck....

Well that's because they are full of artificial crap!

Butter, salt and pepper. Lots of butter

Try added some seasoning and maybe butter or watever flavor you like
salt and pepper always works well too.

Add lots of butter, sour cream, chives, and bacon - maybe some cheddar cheese. That will cover up the bad instant potato taste and weird grainy texture.

youhave to use idaho brand not use to much ingredients and measure carefully.

Can't, no way to make fake potatoes taste like real potatoes.

they aren't potatoes that's why!
put sourcream in it along with milk and butter and salt and pepper.

good milk and i cant believe it's not butter lol

substitue chiken brooth insted of water aprinkle some salt and paper to taste

add more water then uncover and dry out a bit. add garlic. electric mixer?

I like the Potato Buds brand the best.

Add more flakes and salt the potatoes real good

buy the good kinda at foodmax! not the cheap kind! :] yummm

Hire a chef

If it doesn't taste like mashed potatoes to begin with, no matter what you try you'll just end up fake tasting mashed potatoes. Potatoes are cheap, make them the right way.

Ore-Ida is the best brand... those Potato Buds and such...

and yes... use lots of butter!

They'll never taste the same...just get some potatoes, boil them and mash them...it doesn't take that long.

use lots of butter and measure everything

In order to make instant potatoes taste like real potatoes, you have to take some very strong drugs before eating them.

This is not recommended.

There is a reason why fresh food is better than processed crap in a cardboard box.

Use buttermilk, butter, salt, pepper and lots of mixing. Keep them thick!

Instant potatoes will never taste like real potatoes. Sorry!

get betty crockers potatoe buds (you can buy it at shoppers). you need butter, salt, water, and milk.

theres no way to get that home cooked taste from that
saw dust crap

Boil some potatoes... mash them up.. add some butter and whadya know.. real potato flavor!

salt.
totally.
I've got lots of experience in this.
Just not too much, you could accidently ruin them.
Add a little, and then see what you think.
More? or not?
Maybe some butter too.
Butter before the salt though.
Makes it a bit more creamy. :D

I NEVER follow the directions, I add milk, water and butter and mix to desired consistency and enough salt till it tastes right. The mix probably isn't salty enough for you. They will still taste instant, but i always make mine thicker and they are better

ok salt cilantro butter milk but u could always just cut potatoes into chunks boil them 20 min strain and mash then add those seasonings with a lil more milk

increase your milk ratio. use butter not margarine. try adding garlic and or bacon, cheese. i dont know, maybe microwave a potato or two and add it (mashed) to the instant.

Rather than milk or water, use 1/2 and 1/2 or cream. It also depends on the brand you are purchasing. Do not buy generic brands.

Unfortunately this is true, you may add a little more milk or more potatoe flakes if too runny or too thick in consistency and flavor with salt, butter and garlic powder and even onion powder if you choose but they are boxed and not much else you can do.
