you can still make porridge! just boil the oats on the stove or hotplate in a pan for 10 mins or until its how you want it (the longer you leave it the smoother it gets) then add sugar, dried fruit, honey, salt, whatever, its actually the best way to make porridge.

Theres also flapjacks, adding a little flour, some syrup or treackle, some dried fruit, eg raisins and cerrys and currents and sultanas and bakeing in the oven for 20 mins, leaving to cool or eating with double cream when slightly warmed. Can also add flavorings sich as cinammon or cover with iceing sugar or chocolate drizzels.

You can also mix it with salt and gravy granuals and a little oil and use it as a base for covering meat, like a bread crumb but lower in fat.

You can make ginger bread men or other biscuits by simply swapping over 50% of the flour for thye same weight in oats, healthier for children as the flour is more refined then the oats.

You can also use it as a crumble topping, just mix the oats with sugar (granulated) and cover the fruit you are about to bake, eat with custard.

you can also use it in the bath to soften skin- just put it into a muslim bag or a knotted cotten teatowel (the thin ones) and leave it so the hot water run though it. the effect should be soft skin, you can also do this as a face pack and leave on the skin (oats mixed with a little milk) and wash off after for softer skin.

Same thing but as a foot bath, just each time, ensure the water or milk you use is warmed, not cold, it wont work cold.

Flapjacks. If you make these you can take them to work and eat them for breakfast.

2. Add the porridge oats and blend thoroughly.

3. Press into a well greased 18cm square sandwich tin.

For a change I sometimes use 1/2 oats and 1/2 muesli.

Why would you want another recipe for oats. Porridge porridge porridge every time. throw in some sultanas and a pinch of mixed spice add your milk and heat up. You then have a meal that will keep you going for ages.

Make your own muesli. It is easy to make, tastes great, is very nutritious and does not require cooking.

Besides the oats there are broadly speaking two other kinds of ingredients, fresh and dried. You can use one or the other or both.

Dried ingredients can include sultanas, dates, dried apricots or other dried fruit, nuts, seeds, coconut etc. Obviously with dried ingredients you can make it before hand. If you take it to work you can either add the milk at work or add it before you go to work. If you add the milk before you go to work you will obviously need a leak proof container but the taste will be very creamy and even more delicious.

With fresh ingredients, some you can add before hand such as fresh peaches, grapes, cherries, but most like apples, pears, strawberry's, bananas etc you will have to add at the last minute.

You can also add honey or brown sugar if you have a sweet tooth.

Another idea is to add dried milk powder and then at work you will only need to add water.

Go easy on the oats however, a few tablespoons of oats and a lot of fruit. If you use too much oats you will become bloated and fart a lot.

Here is a really good Scottish site for you there are loads of different recipes on it for you. Enjoy!!

For exam[ple try this.

Herring with an Oatmeal, Mushroom and Parsley Stuffing
(serves 2)

4 herrings, approx 225 – 300g cleaned (see cook’s tip)

2 tablespoons oil

1 small onion peeled and finely chopped

3 tablespoons Hamlyns Scottish oatmeal

125g brown cap mushrooms roughly chopped

25g butter

1 egg yoke

4 tablespoons milk

3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine

juice of 1/2 lemon

salt and freshly ground black pepper

Lemon wedges to serve

Method:

Heat the oil, then add the onion. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes until softened but not coloured. Add 2 tbsp of the oatmeal and cook stirring for a further 3 to 4 minutes until the oatmeal turns slightly golden. Add the mushrooms and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley and lemon juice to taste. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the egg yolk to bind the mixture together.

Use a little of the butter to grease an ovenproof dish. Spoon the stuffing into the herring cavities. Brush the herring with milk and roll in the remaining oatmeal to coat.

Lay the fish in the greased dish and dot with the remaining butter. Bake in a medium oven on the middle shelf for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the oatmeal is golden brown and the herring flesh is just firm.

Serve immediately.

Cook’s Tip:

To prepare the herrings trim away the fins and tails using strong scissors. Scrape off the scales from tail to head using a fish scaler or back of a knife rinsing frequently. Slit along the belly and remove the intestines; rinse thoroughly. Carefully bone out the backbone (if time permits).

5. Allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before cutting into oblong bars. Leave until cold before removing the flapjacks from the tin, then store in an airtight container.

You could also add in some dried fruit such as raisins, cranberries or sultanas.

i would take them home and use them as a face pack, there excellent for the skin and can even be added to a bath.then go buy myself some breakfast bars .

mix in enough sugar for how sweet you like your crumble.Grate in some orange peel (the juice added to the fruit underneath is extra good).

rub enough butter into the oats to get small lumps.

spread this over the fruit and bake in a 180C, 350F oven til golden brown

pop your oats in a mixing bowl melt some chocolate poor on to oats and mix it up then flatten it and cut into slices let it set then eat it Mmmmmmmm
